Professional Learning Plan

 My Personal Learning Plan

I have a strong preference for learning through doing. In the next 40 hours of SPP, I will endeavour to:

  1. Develop a suite of age-appropriate information literacy lessons for my class.
  2. Work with the TL to establish a steering committee to develop policies for the new library.
  3. Work with the HOC to support staff to improve their knowledge and skills related to using ICTs to support learinng.
  4. Develop a school information literacy program based on the ICT Student Expectations.
  5. Learn how to set up and manage book raps, reading blogs to support student engagement with literature.
  6. Investigate library management systems and cataloguing.
  7. Investigate alternatives to books, e.g. subscriptions to online encyclopaedias newspapers and other reference materials.
  8. Investigate uses of ClickView for primary school purposes.
  9. Explore how other libraries cater for students with language backgrounds other than standard Australian English.
  10. Develop an appreciation of how a diverse range of libraries (secondary school, council, other primary school libraries) are managed.
  11. Establish links between the school and the local Brisbane City Council library.
  12. Investigate how to use an evidence-based approach to capitalise on the data available from Accelerated Reader to inform my curriculum planning in English.
  13. Consider options for research related to the use of particular strategies and processes to produce desired learning outcomes.
  14. Seek opportunities to be involved in TL professional networks and professional development.
  15. Be involved in ACARA consultation processes.

Progress
I have highlighted the items in my personal learning plan that I have worked on by colouring them blue. The following are examples of the progress I have made on particular items.

 i. Developed a suite of age-appropriate information literacy lessons for my class.
  • Planned and/or implemented several information literacy lessons that incorporate the use of ICTs.
  • Found out that MOE excludes Active X. This the websites available. Some excellent educational applications use Active X. E.g. Tag Galaxy and some applications on the BBC website.
  • Planned and conducted lessons related to using the Dewey Decimal system to locate books in the library.
  • Planned and conducted Year 4 & 6 lessons on preparing reference lists.
  • Planned and conducted introduction to Google lessons.
  • Taught Years 2, 4 & 6 students how to use Alice Inquiry to search for books and reserve books.

Library Policies

ii. Work with the TL to establish a steering committee to develop policies for the new library.

I have developed a draft collection development policy, including strategies for selecting resources and dealing with challenged resources based on examples from Education Queensland's Library Services. This suite of documents is ready for consultation.

iii.  Work with the HOC to establish a working party to develop ICT and information literacy programs.

The first step in tis proccess was upskilling the HOCs at our school. I mentored the HOC and acting HOC to achieve their ICT Certificates and worked with the HOC to establish a community of practice amongst the Prep teachers who were working toward their ICT Certificates by designing and implementing a BeeBot unit of work.

vi. Investigate library management systems and cataloguing.

I completed the Alice Advanced course and designed a curriculum resource box database proto-type. The next step is to investigate the most efficient way of recording 'virtual curriculum resource boxes in Alice to facilitate storage and retrieval of information related to the physical and virtual locations of resources for particular uits of work.

ESL

ix. Explore how other libraries cater for students with LBOTE.

I completed a unit called TEchnology and Second Language Acquisition and designed a proto-type for an ESL virtual classroom for the ESL teachers at our school that included a virtual library of links to online language learning activies. the virtual library also contains links to texts in languages other than English to support students in continuing to learn their home languages.

xi. Established links between the school and the local Brisbane City Council library.

I completed 20 hours work experience and organised class visits and an author visit in consultation the classroom teachers and the libriarian-in-charge of the local Council library.

TL Networks

xiv. Seek opportunities to be involved in TL professional networks and professional development.

This year I have atttended TL network meetings in our district, assisted as scorekeeper at the District Reader's Cup final and attended the Creating Library Futures conference.

Teacher Performance Development Framework

This year our school began to implement a teacher performance development framework. I offered to be the 'test case' for the deputy to begin implementing the framework.

Attached is the results of Phase 1 - the Performance Development Self-Assessment. The self-assessment serves as a revised personal learning plan.

The teacher performance development strategy has implications for my personal professional development and for the professional development that the TL and I will provide for other staff members.

Attached is our proposal for Accelerated Reader professional development for 2012. As the school's SmartClassrooms coordinator, next I will develop a proposal for SmartClassrooms professional development related to implementation of the Education Queensland's SmartClassrooms Professional Development Framework and the ICT Student Expectations.
