Library Priorities (5 hours 19 December 2008)
In this week’s meeting with the LIC, we discussed library priorities, including promoting the User Ed IT classes; emphasising on-the-job training; creating a balance of physical process work and automation; and maintaining home library services)
The Brisbane City Council libraries prefer an on-the-job training model that aims to multi-skill their employees. Library staff advocate a achieving a balance of physical process work and automated processes.
Brisbane City Council libraries have a very client-focussed approach. Their website is a gateway to a range of resources. Each library site endeavours to extend its services in a variety ways to connect with different groups of people in its local community.
Libraries provide User Ed IT classes for the elderly. The focus of these classes is to promote online learning skills. They also maintain home library services for people who can’t get to the library. This service automatically predicts users' reading needs and sends out 30 books. They host book club meetings and provide story telling and craft sessions for pre-school aged children. And they organise author visits. They also provide reader services such as the Who Else Writes Like book.
