City Council Library


SITE 3 I decided to take an outward looking approach to teacher-librarianship, connecting our students to the world outside school. The local Council library seemed an excellent place to start. Initially, I thought establishing links with the library would supplement our limited non-fiction collection. Completing 20 hours of work experience at a BCC library raised my awareness of the wide range of resources and services available through BCC libraries.

Final Day (5 hours - 20 December 2008)

Part of my final day was spent out the back learning how to process acquisitions. I also learnt the circulation desk processes related to accepting payment of fines and reserved item fees, making computer bookings, and processing 'in transit holds' and 'Nundah holds'. Reserved items are placed on the designated shelves in alphabetical order according to the members’ last names to facilitate quick retrieval by members. Collection Management (5 hours, 18 December 2008)

This week we discussed the nature of the library's collection and collection management processes for maintaining a ‘floating’ collection across multiple sites. A 'floating' collection requires different collection management strategies, including for example, rotating items amongst libraries to refresh the small collections of picture books, junior fiction, young adult, junior audio visual and magazines held on each site and processing reserved items imported from other sites.

Nundah Council Library Briefing (1 hour - 16 December, 2008)

To start my work experience at the Nundah Brisbane City Council Library, I met with the librarian in charge of to discuss library routines, the library's school holiday program and work place health and safety considerations.

We negotiated my hours and discussed the school holiday program which comprises story telling, craft activities, and a pantomime. Then most of the meeting was spent discussing work place health and safety. Brisbane City Council Libraries have a Zero Harm policy. This invo...
