Centenary Library

An introduction to the world of teacher librarianship The school library holds a central location within the campus. As a learning environment and resource centre, it services a Prep to Year 7 student population of 580 (with an increasing number of students for whom English is a second or subsequent language) and teaching staff of 30. Although small and ‘spartan’, it plays a pivotal role in the students’ personal, social and academic development. The Resource Centre Guide(undated) rationale states that the school library should be ‘an integral part of the school community’, with resources that ‘enrich and extend the development of the child as an individual’. The teacher librarian (TL), library-aide (LA) and teachers promote a ‘positive and happy’ library environment where children ‘feel free to enjoy themselves and learn to respect and understand rules associated with using a community centre’. It's always well attended before and after school and during lunch breaks. The library houses the school’s Accelerated Reader collection and is the home of the chess enthusiasts. It buzzes with activity as students discuss and select books amongst the bookshelves, take quizzes or search for resources at the computer terminals, work as library monitors at the shelves or circulation desk, and engage in spirited chess competitions at the work tables.

The New Library

Meeting future needs A new library is currently underconstruction and due for completion in November 2008. Our new library will have more space and far greater ICT capacity than our existing library. In addition to search terminals, a lab of 24-30 computers will be installed.

About Me

Keryn Henderson As the school's Smart Classrooms Coordinator it is my responsibility to provide staff with ongoing professional development opportunities about the use of ICTs and related pedagogies. My purpose in undertaking this course was to improve my professional understanding and practice regarding information and ICT literacies and to develop understandings about how libraries work. My new knowledge and skills will enable me to assist our school to make the transition to a new, better-equipped library, and maximise the use of its resources. This website is designed to be a repository of resources and references that will help me to create a school learning community that shares and reflects on professional practice.
